Edinburgh, Scotland – June 4, 2024
CirTec, part of Nijhuis Saur Industries, has been honoured with the prestigious Lighthouse Award during the BlueTech Forum 2024 held in Edinburgh. This award recognizes CirTec’s outstanding contributions to innovation and sustainability for construction of the world’s first large-scale cellulose recovery plant.
The Lighthouse Awards, presented annually, celebrate pioneers and visionaries who drive positive change in water technology. Collaboration was the key to success for CirTec, as they demonstrated with their groundbreaking solution to recover and reuse cellulose from sewage, addressing critical water challenges. Their commitment to advancing sustainable practices and improving water quality has set a new standard to keep helping clients to restore and close the water loop and continue #MissionWater.
The award ceremony took place at the Assembly Rooms in the heart of Edinburgh (Scotland), where industry influencers, decision-makers, and water professionals gathered to celebrate excellence. The esteemed panel of judges recognized CirTec’s innovative approach and dedication to recover raw materials from sewage water, save energy and reduce the CO2 footprint of sewage treatment plants.
First large-scale cellulose recovery plant
Construction of the world’s first large-scale cellulose recovery plant at Severn Trent’s Net zero hub sewage treatment works in Strongford (UK) is in process. This groundbreaking project aims to extract digestible residual streams and clean cellulose from influent. The process involves re-treating the residue stream on-site to produce biogas, drying and hygienising the cellulose to create a marketable semi-finished product. This is a major step forward in resource recovery and sustainability within the water treatment industry, made possible by close collaboration between CirTec, Severn Trent, AtkinsRealis, JN Bentley, and the project team at the Net Zero Hub to reduce waste, conserve resources, and protect the environment.
“We are thrilled to receive the Lighthouse Award,” said Coos Wessels, CEO of CirTec. “This recognition reaffirms our commitment to pushing the boundaries of water technology and of resource recovery, especially from sewage. Our team’s hard work and passion have led to transformative solutions that benefit communities and the environment.”
CirTec’s award-winning innovations include advanced sewage treatment systems, and sustainable designs. Cirtec has recently joined Nijhuis Saur Industries and their clients can now benefit from a complete portfolio of sewage treatment systems. The CirTec contribution aligns with the theme of “Innovation in Action,” which resonated throughout the forum.
As the water sector faces unprecedented challenges, CirTec remains committed to driving positive change. The awarding of Lighthouse Award underscores their position being one of the leading cellulose recovery companies in the industry, and they will continue to inspire others to create a more water-secure world as part of their #missionwater purpose.
