SMART-Plant
SMART-Plant is an acronym for “Scale-up of low-carbon footprint MAterial Recovery Techniques in existing wastewater treatment PLANTs.
SMART-Plant will scale-up in real environments eco-innovative and energy-efficient solutions to renovate existing waste water treatment plants and close the circular value chain by applying low-carbon techniques to recover materials that are otherwise lost. 7+2 pilot systems will be optimised for more than two years in real environment in five municipal water treatment plants, including two post-processing facilities. The systems will be automated with the aim of optimising waste water treatment, resource recovery, energy-efficiency and reduction of greenhouse emissions. A comprehensive SMART portfolio comprising biopolymers, cellulose, fertilisers and intermediates will be recovered and processed up to the final end-products.

The activities of CirTec are the recovery of screenings and the production of clean cellulose. The cellulose is used toilet paper recovered from sewage water, which is upgraded to a high-grade resource for, amongst other, the production of biocomposites. The first installation for the recovery of cellulose from sewage water is built at the WTTP Geestmerambacht with support of water authority Hollands Noorderkwartier (www.hhnk.nl).
